Midsommar favs
Recommendations from my commerce writer brain to your inbox
Actually Good Things is a weekly newsletter filled with product recs from a seasoned commerce editor. Followers of my old blog are in for a treat because I’m back, and this time, I’m a way better writer.
It’s mid-summer (midsommar, if you will), so for my second send-out, I’m sharing actually good things I’m using during the sunny season.*
Consumerism aside, I’m leaning into polish-free toes and air-dried hair this summer. Like, truly no nail lacquer and hair that’s actually air-dried and not simply styled to look so.
Let’s dive in, shall we?
The Ryl Co. Rocket Pop Iced Tea
My perfect daytime drink is not too sweet, calorie-free (or close to it), and without carbonation—bubbles give me violent hiccups. This extremely patriotic and undeniably summery iced tea checks all the boxes.
Naturium Dew-Glow Moisturizer SPF 50
I like everything Naturium is doing. The new-ish brand launched in 2019 to great applause, was smartly acquired by e.l.f. in 2023, and is now a top skincare seller at Target. I’m not into mineral sunscreens—anyone else willing to admit that? This one protects and delivers a dreamy, dewy glow for under 20 bucks.
Prequel Universal Skin Solution Dermal Spray
Hypochlorous acid can be a game-changer in humid weather. The scary-sounding-yet-actually-mild ingredient is antimicrobial (it kills bacteria in sweat that cause odors) and soothes irritation. I spritz it on after a sweaty walk and use it to disinfect various gadgets, like my microneedling hair stamp. There are cheaper and pricier versions (I see you, Tower 28), but they’re pretty similar. Pair with Youth to the People Superfood Skin Drip to tamper redness.
Peepers Round Polarized Sunglasses
Expensive sunglasses aren’t less breakable. Peepers are good-quality with polarization up to par with higher-end designs. And this particular pair doesn’t slide off my small (or maybe just weirdly shaped) face.
Funboy x Barbie Inflatable Kiddie Pool
This generously sized, more-photogenic-than-it-needs-to-be kiddie pool is great for kids and grown-ups alike. It’s a little more elevated than those hard plastic ones (which I’m not above), and a few inches of hose water warms up fast on a hot day.
Ponyflo Sunblocker Wide Brim Hat
I wear this decidedly dorky UPF 50+ visor on my hot-mom walks, while hosing down my kids, and—just yesterday—when placing ant-killing stations around our yard. (Not to brag, but my household hasn’t seen an ant since 2021. 💅🏻)
Dry Idea Antiperspirant & Deodorant
I’m partial to aluminum deodorants (the only true antiperspirants)—so sue me. This solid stick does serious work in the sticky summer. Wanna treat your pits to something fancier (and hop on my aluminum bandwagon)? Donna Karan makes a good one too.
Did you know the fix for white deodorant streaks on clothes is to rub fabric of the same color against the garment? Voilà! Gone.
Levi's 501 Mid Thigh Short
These classic Levi’s shorts are relatively conservative and don’t give me wedgie. They’re a sweet deal if you get them from Amazon. I have the colors Multiple Choice (a medium wash with ‘90s appeal) and Pleased to Meet You.
Birkenstock Arizona Sandal in Black/White Split
I’m won’t tell you these ubiquitous sandals are on-trend this summer—pretty sure they’re not. But this striking black-and-white colorway garners praise. My dad, king of memorable compliments, said, “Woah, those are sooooo cinematic.” ✌🏻
MDSolarSciences Lip Balm SPF 30
I keep this SPF lip balm in my purse. Want something closer to the $5 range? You can’t go wrong with Banana Boat or O'Keeffe's.
Bogg Bag
This humungous free-standing, flat-bottomed tote is made of a Crocs-like material that can take a beating and be hosed off as needed. It’s just the thing for hauling towels, wet swimsuits, picnic stuff, wine bottles, you name it.
